Alternate Title – Not Enough Porta Potties
I did not plan on running this race, but I had some friends running it and thought it would be a good excuse to get a race in. I ran this race years ago and remember that the course was hilly and tougher than the Brooklyn Half. I had PR’d earlier this year in May at the BK Half and did not expect to get another, but I thought I could still get a sub 2 hour time.
Alternate Title: Forget the Royal Wedding, I PR’d in the rain!
With the strange, cold weather this year, I was not running much outdoors. I also had no races lined up except this one, so it was a mile here and there on the treadmill January through March. In April, the realization came so I increased the volume to 15+ miles a week until last week, which was 25. With a short 4 week plan, there was no time for a taper. I was not sure I could beat my PR 1:55, moreover complete this under 2 hours.
This was my third marathon. I completed Chicago (4:51) and NYC (4:57) prior but met the wall each time. Also I am a 2x Ironman (Back of Pack) finisher. My last Ironman finish was not strong (a lot of walking) so I searched for a race that I would run the entire time. A friend suggested and convinced me to sign up and run with her in Philly (she bowed out due to injury). I trained a little under three months with my biggest run at 18. I did not expect an awesome race, but this time I focused on race nutrition (vs time).
Last year I competed in Lake Placid, but DNF’d (Did Not Finish) due to missing the bike cutoff for the second loop. You could imagine my excitement and my anticipation (patiently plotting my revenge on the Lake Placid course) to this year’s race. I made sure I practiced more hill climbs (Central Park loops, 9W & Bear Mountain) and added leg work in the gym to help on climbs.
I will finish this time… Well, at least make the bike cutoff.
